Alternative Measures

Alternative Measures is a way to address crime in conjunction with the criminal justice system. These programs attempt to deal with criminal behaviour in a proactive manner.
With Crown Counsel referrals, an Indigenous youth or adult will participate in a program that resolves cases within a community agency or with community participation. The agency will interview the offender and will draft an agreement outlining how the offender will make amends for their crime. These agreements generally require the offender to complete tasks such as:
-
Community service hours
-
Verbal or written apologies to the victim
-
Restoring property to the victim

Initial training was provided by the BC Corrections Branch. The decision about which offenders are eligible for these Alternative Measures programs is made by the Crown Prosecutor. The police, defense lawyers, the victim, or the accused may also request a referral to an Alternative Measures program.
